If You Were Here

Dear Mom,

If you were here today, we would sit on the deck together and enjoy this Fall weather.  We’d reminisce about the trip we took to the New England states to see the Fall colors (yes, the trip we took without Dad, lol).  We would enjoy the crisp air, watch the leaves from the Walnut trees float to the ground, and every 10 minutes or so we’d have to yell over the train horn as it goes through town.  Eventually, we would go inside and peel apples to make your famous Apple Rolls.  I always loved baking with you, and I’m thankful for those memories of all those times we made yummy treats together.

If you were here, I have no doubt that we would have a favorite Netflix show that we’d watch together.  And we’d text each other to see which episode the other was on.  It would be like the times we talked about All My Children when we recorded it ON THE VCR!  We might even watch the Netflix show together while eating Chex mix and drinking hot tea.

If you were here, I would take you on a road trip.  With my flexible schedule, we could go for a quick get-away whenever we want.  I think you would love all the National Parks I’ve been going to.

If you were here, I would tell you all about the new business I started.  I would tell you how much I love it and how it incorporates many of the passions I have.  And if you were here, I think you’d be proud of me and the success I’ve had so far.

If you were here, I would introduce you to chai lattes which I’ve grown to love.  And I think you’d love them too.  We would drink one together as we sat on my porch enjoying the breeze.

If you were here, we’d work on a puzzle together as the weather gets cooler.  It was always our favorite thing to do over Christmas break.  I always loved that we would “fight” over putting the last piece in.  And to this day, I laugh whenever I put together the last piece because I know you would be reaching for it if you were here.

If you were here, you’d help me pick out flowers to plant in the Spring.  Your flower garden always looked so good and I know you would have great recommendations on what I should plant.

If you were here, we would have lunch and cheddar biscuits at Red Lobster.

If you were here, I would tell you how much I love you and appreciate you because that’s something I was never good at in the past, not verbally anyway.  I’ve grown a lot over the last few years and I think you would admire the hard work I’ve put into that growth.
