What I’ve Learned From Hallmark Movies

What I’ve Learned From Hallmark Movies

If you’ve watched more than one Hallmark movie, then you know they are almost the same and you know the ending is predictable.  Most people probably even say that the movies are unrealistic.  Because after all, how many people can say they found love after spending two days at home for Christmas?  I used to hate watching them, because I couldn’t understand why those kind of things didn’t happen to me.  But yet, so many people still watch them, including me, because they make us feel warm and fuzzy all over.

Instead of dreading when the movies come on, I have decided It’s more fun to make a game out of it.  Is there a soldier in the movie?  Is it the male or female love interest that is a widow?  Whose car will break down?  Who gets offered a fancy new job in another city?

The storylines may be unrealistic, but I have learned a few things while watching this year and have been able to relate it to REAL life.

  1. Even in the face of tragedy, the characters choose joy.
  2. There always seems to be a misunderstanding between two of the characters.  They jump to conclusions because they don’t have the full story, and it causes problems until they communicate about it.
  3. There’s always a happy ending.  Okay, we all know that doesn’t happen in real life.  Or does it?  You might think some people get their happy ending, but others don’t because of death too soon, sickness, not being able to have children, or many other things we are faced with.  But for those of us who have chosen salvation, there is always a happy ending AND a predictable ending.  We know we will spend eternity in heaven, and that’s the best ending we could have!

And this is the promise that he made to us –eternal life.” 1 John 2:25 (ESV)

So while the movies seem cheesy and fake, I think we can still learn something from them.
